Tree Heart

Those kids,

that taught me how to smoke

and fight

and drink

until my stomach hurt—

they were my world

And I wonder

if the kids now

my age then

are meeting their worlds.

I hope so

I pray they cry together

and bandage one another's arms.

I hope

they are experiencing the best friendships

that they will ever have,

because when they grow older

and reminisce

about the glory days—

those shit days,

they will all have someone that they are unsure

is still alive.

And these spectres,

those muses

I pray they don't have Facebook

and we’ll always wonder:

Did a tree grow through their heart.
